How it works in the books
Catch-up work focuses on missing months or years, while cleanup focuses on correcting records that already exist. Many projects require both.
Example
If January through April were never entered, the work is catch-up; if May was entered twice and never reconciled, May needs cleanup.
What can go wrong
Starting with the newest month can preserve bad opening balances from older incomplete periods.
