General ledger

The general ledger is the detailed record of activity and balances for every account in the books.

How it works in the books

It is the transaction-level foundation for the trial balance and financial statements. Reviewers use it to trace report totals back to dates, descriptions, amounts, and source entries.

Example

The rent expense ledger lists each rent entry that adds up to the rent total on the income statement.

What can go wrong

A clean-looking financial statement can still hide duplicate or misclassified entries visible in the ledger.
