How it works in the books

A complete bookkeeping process connects source documents to categorized transactions, account balances, reconciliations, and financial reports. Data entry is only one part of the work; the records also need to agree with outside evidence such as bank and credit card statements.

Example

A monthly bookkeeper records sales and expenses, matches each bank account to its statement, investigates differences, and delivers a profit and loss statement and balance sheet.

What can go wrong

A bank feed that imported without errors is not proof that the books are complete or reconciled.
